Preserving the Places That Built Our Communities.

As a historic preservation nonprofit, we help small communities protect, restore, and reuse historic buildings.

We believe every historic building holds a story worth telling and a future worth building. Through dedicated restoration and community advocacy, we revitalize the landmarks that define our heritage.

Our Historic Preservation Nonprofit Mission

Our mission is to give historic buildings in small communities another chance - preserving the places that make our towns unique, creating space for new businesses and opportunities, and helping others find the resources they need to save buildings worth keeping.

When We Lose a Building, We Lose More Than a Building.

We Lose More Than a Building.

Every historic building carries the stories of the people who built it, worked inside it, and helped shape the community around it. When one disappears, a piece of that history disappears with it.

But in a small town, the loss can go much further.

When an older commercial building is torn down, a new building doesn't always take its place. Too often, the community is left with an empty lot—and one less place for a small business to open its doors.

That means fewer storefronts. Fewer opportunities for entrepreneurs. Fewer businesses bringing customers into town. And one less piece of a Main Street that could have contributed to the community's future.

That's why we believe preservation can also be economic development.

By finding new purpose for the buildings we already have, we can protect the character of our communities while creating spaces for businesses, jobs, ideas, and new reasons for people to come to town.

Sometimes saving an old building isn't just about remembering what happened there. It's about making room for what could happen next.

Old Buildings Can Create New Opportunities.

Revitalization isn't just about the physical structure; it’s about the economic and social potential unlocked when a historic building is reintroduced to its community as a functioning space.

Preservation is about more than aesthetics; it is about maintaining the soul of our communities. These landmarks anchor our Main Streets, providing a sense of place that modern construction simply cannot replicate.

By saving these beams and bricks, we are investing in a future that honors its origins—creating vibrant, hopeful spaces where residents can continue to build their own history for years to come.

Sometimes the Biggest Question Is Simply: Where Do I Start?

Establishing the organization as a guide and template for other preservation efforts. Historic buildings are more than old brick and timber. They are storefronts, gathering places, landmarks and pieces of the communities that built them. When they disappear, we lose more than a building.

Historic Citizens State Bank of Green Isle, Minnesota

Our First Chapter: Green Isle

The story of Brick & Beam Preservation begins in the rural town of Green Isle, Minnesota. At the heart of this small community sits the historic Citizens State Bank building—a structure that represents more than just financial history; it represents the resilience and character of the people who built it.

What We Hope to Build

A landscape where historic preservation is not a luxury, but a common-sense foundation for economic development.

A network of revitalized Main Streets where local businesses thrive in spaces that have served their communities for generations.

A renewed pride in the architecture of the Midwest, ensuring that rural Minnesota remains defined by its unique character.

A future where the stories written in brick and beam are preserved for our children and their children to read.
